Murphy sat at the small desk by the window in his hotel room. He loaded up his pipe, poured a shot of his father’s whiskey into a water glass, and opened his notebooks.

He read his notes and then read them again.

He emptied the glass and tossed in another ounce. The bottle was getting low. He would see if he could purchase a new bottle in Omaha.

He sipped and read his notes one more time.

When he finished the pipe and emptied the glass a second time, he closed the notebook and went to the bed.

Kyoto was in two places where counterfeit money turned up in the past several weeks.

So what?

So why didn’t he trust the man?

He was here as a dignitary representing his country and to study the cattle business and what’s more, showed no suspicious behavior whatsoever.

Except to be in the same places where counterfeit money turned up.

And that in itself wasn’t a crime.

He stood up and returned to the desk. He opened the notebook and got out his folded map. Denver, Dodge City, Kansas City, Omaha had what in common?

They formed a nice circle reachable by railroad in a matter of days or even hours.

If he wanted to blanket a large area with counterfeit money quickly, what better way to do it than by use of the railroad.

East of Omaha took you to the larger, more modern and sophisticated cities where banks would be more likely to spot counterfeit currency quicker than out west. Minneapolis, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, the most advanced cities in the nation would make it nearly impossible to move a large quantity of counterfeit money undetected.

He would stay west where the towns and banks were easier to fool and maybe go further west all the way to the coast.

What was puzzling more than anything else was why go to all the trouble to produce first-rate counterfeit money only to pass small amounts?

Even if you managed to dump a thousand dollars in every town you stopped at along the railroad routes headed west, it wouldn’t add up to very much. Maybe fifty thousand before you ran out of stops or got caught.

The risk outweighed the benefits.

What was happening right now was, as he first suspected, a test run.

But for what?

To accomplish what?

It would be impossible to make a profit of any large amount passing small denominations of counterfeit bills even in so large an area as the American West.

Murphy picked up a pencil and looked at his notebook.

Test was to see if the bills and notes would pass inspection upon being used at shops, saloons, and banks. Success rate of 100%.

What is the short-term goal?

What does he hope to accomplish?

What is the ultimate goal?

Murphy set the pencil down and closed the notebook.
